I think if you’re a DevOps person in any capacity, the utility of Docker is very clear. Your things run in containers that are identical everywhere. Assuming Docker is working/running, the code will execute in a reliably consistent way whether that is Docker running on some developer’s computer, or a sky computer. The (massive) appeal there is that bugs will happen consistently. “Production-only” bugs become a thing of the past. There are other benefits, too, like shipping a dev environment to a team of developers that is entirely consistent, even across platforms, rather than battling with individual developers computers.
So… great? Use it all the time for everything? The stopper there is that it’s complicated, and web dev is already friggin complicated and it often just feels like too much. Andrew Welch, however, makes the case that you don’t have to learn Docker super deeply in order to use it:
Docker is a devops tool that some people find intimidating because there is much to learn in order to build things with it. And while that’s true, it’s actually quite simple to start using Docker for some very practical and useful things, by leveraging what other people have created.
Fair point. I don’t deeply understand most of the technology I use, but I can still use it.
While I run Docker all day for CodePen’s fancy dev environment, that’s what my use is limited to. I don’t reach for it like Andrew does for everything. But I can see how it might feel liberating having all that isolation between projects. One of my favorite of points that Andrew makes is:
Switching to a new computer is easy. You don’t have to spend hours meticulously reconfiguring your shiny new MacBook Pro with all the interconnected tools & packages you need.
I find myself bopping around between computers fairly often for various odd reasons, and being able to make the switch with minimal fussing around is appealing.
In nature, no two things are ever the same. Life is imperfect, unpredictable, and beautiful. We can walk through the same forest every day and see differently colored leaves. We can look up at the clouds every minute and watch a whole new formation. The physical world is transient and ever-changing. What if our designs were a little more like this?
Often, we spend hours, weeks, even months carefully crafting our websites/applications, sculpting every last pixel until they are just right. Then, we set them free into the world — a perfectly formed, yet static snapshot of something that once was a living, evolving thing.
There is (of course!) nothing wrong with this way of working. But what if we let go of the idea that there can be only one final version of a design? What if our interfaces were free to take more than one form?
I could write forever about this stuff, but I think it’s best to show you what I mean. Naturally, here’s a Pen:
CodePen Embed Fallback
Try clicking the “Regenerate” button above. Notice how the interface changes just a little every time? By parameterizing aspects of a design, then randomizing those parameters, we can create near-infinite variations of a single idea. For those familiar with generative art — art made using a system that includes an element of autonomy — this is likely a familiar concept.
For makers (particularly perfectionists like me!), this approach to design can be incredibly liberating.
For the folk who use the things we make, it creates an experience that is truly individual. In randomizing carefully chosen aspects of our interfaces, they become ephemeral, and to me, this is kind of magical. No two people will ever see the same version of our work.
The web can be a cold, sterile place. By embracing the unpredictable, we can add a joyful, organic touch to our creations — to me, this is the essence of generative UI design, and I would love if you gave it a try! SVG, Canvas, and CSS/Paint API are all excellent mediums for generative work, so pick the one that is most familiar and experiment.
Just remember: apply carefully, and always be mindful of accessibility/UX. Magically evolving designs are great, but only if they are great for everyone.
What is one thing people can do to make their website better?
Exactly what you want to build!
Ask yourself:
What drew you to development in the beginning?
Is there an experimental API that you’ve been wanting to try out?
What could you spend all night hacking away at, just for the fun of it?
Your personal site is a statement of who you are and what you want to do. If you showcase your favorite type of work, you’ll get more requests for similar projects or jobs — feeding back into a virtuous cycle of doing more of what you love.
Like stage performances, you can tell when love and excitement went into creating a website. One of my favorite examples is Cassie Evans’ website. She added so many fun flourishes (including an adorable SVG self-portrait). The joy baked into her work has (at least partially) led to her current role, bestowing animation superpowers at GreenSock!
So, go forth, and create a trailing mouse cursor. Or a confetti component! A real-time drawing pad, or some hardware to show the current state of your coffee machine. Really, anything that gets you excited to build!
Newsletters have become the gold standard for keeping in touch with a large number of far-flung clients and customers. But what exactly is a newsletter, and how do you create professional and eye-catching newsletters with minimal fuss and expense?
Well, that’s exactly what we’ll be covering today, so read on.
What Is a Newsletter?
A newsletter is a document sent by businesses on a regular schedule to subscribers of the business’s mailing list. It can be a printed document delivered by mail, but today it’s most often delivered by email. Newsletters can contain everything from text and illustrations to photos, videos, and links.
The best way to create a professional and eye-catching newsletter is with a newsletter template. A newsletter template is a file that’s created professionally using software like Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, and more.
Templates provide an overall layout with placeholder text, images, and graphics that can be replaced with information relevant to your business. The beauty of newsletter templates is that they can be used over and over again to establish brand consistency. What You’ll Learn in This Adobe Illustrator Tutorial
Hit Control-N to create a new document. Select Pixels from the Units drop-down menu, set the Width and Height to 850 px, and then click that More Settings button. Select RGB for the Color Mode, set the Raster Effects to Screen (72 ppi), and then click Create Document.
Enable the Grid (View > Show Grid) and Snap to Grid (View > Snap to Grid). You will need a grid every 5 px, so simply go to Edit > Preferences > Guides & Grid, enter 5 in the Gridline every box and 1 in the Subdivisions box. Try not to get discouraged by all that grid—it will make your work easier, and keep in mind that you can easily enable or disable it using the Control-„ keyboard shortcut.
You should also open the Info panel (Window > Info) for a live preview with the size and position of your shapes. Don’t forget to set the unit of measurement to pixels from Edit > Preferences > Units. All these options will significantly increase your work speed.
2. How to Create the Sun
Step 1
Pick the Rectangle Tool (M) and focus on your Toolbar. Remove the color from the stroke and then select the fill and set its color to R=191 G=246 B=255.
Move to your artboard and click and drag to create a 280 x 200 px shape—the grid and Snap to Grid will make it easier.
Step 2
Switch to the Ellipse Tool (L) and hold down the Shift key as you click and drag to easily create a 280 px circle. Fill this new shape with R=254 G=209 B=77 and place it exactly as shown in the following image.
Step 3
Make sure that your circle is still selected and go to Object > Path > Offset Path. Set the Offset to -30 px and click OK. Change the fill color of this new shape to R=254 G=193 B=14.
3. How to Create the Tent
Step 1
Using the Selection Tool (V), select your blue rectangle. Press Control-C to copy it and then Shift-Control-V to add a copy in the same place.
Replace the fill color of this new shape with R=114 G=0 B=0 and then switch to the Direct Selection Tool (A). Hold down the Shift key to select the top anchor points and then go to Object > Path > Average. Check the Both box and click OK to easily turn your rectangle into a triangle.
Step 2
Grab the Ellipse Tool (L) and use it to create a 280 x 400 px shape. Fill this ellipse with R=206 G=55 B=37 and place it exactly as shown in the first image.
Switch to the Selection Tool (V), select your triangle, and add a copy in front (Control-C > Control-F). Hold down the Shift key to select this copy along with the ellipse added in this step and click the Intersect button from the Pathfinder panel (Window > Pathfinder).
Step 3
Make sure that your red shape is still selected and add two copies in front (Control-C > Control-F > Control-F). Select just the top copy and press the up arrow key twice and the left arrow key once, which will move your selection 10 px up and 5 px to the left.
Now, hold down Shift to select both copies added in this step, and click the Minus Front button from the Pathfinder panel. Fill the resulting shapes with R=254 G=209 B=77.
Step 4
Hold down the Shift key to select the red shape along with the slim yellow one and go to Object > Transform > Reflect. Check the Vertical box and click the Copy button. Place the newly made shapes as shown in the second image.
4. How to Add the Text
Step 1
Reselect the Rectangle Tool (M) and use it to create a 280 x 60 px shape. Place it as shown in the following image and fill it with R=254 G=209 B=77. Keep this rectangle selected, switch to the Direct Selection Tool (A), and focus on the control panel to set the Corner Radius to 10 px.
Step 2
Finally, select the Type Tool (T) from your toolbar and focus on the Character panel (Window > Type > Character) to set the settings for the text that you’re about to add.
Select the Knicknack font and set the size to 40 pt, and then you can click on your artboard. Type in „SUMMER CAMP”, set the text color to R=206 G=55 B=37, and place it as shown in the following image. With this final touch, your vector summer camp logo is complete.
