In this tutorial I will show you how to create an easy cartoon text effect, using a pattern and a layer style.

This cartoon text effect we will be creating is a part of Cartoon and Comic Book Styles from my Cartoon and Comic Book Collection.

Tutorial Assets

The following assets were used during this tutorial:

Brady Bunch Remastered font
Red Dots pattern
Stars background

Before you start creating the cartoon text effect, download and install
the font and the pattern into your Photoshop, and also download the
background.

1. How to Load a Document Background

We will use the Stars background from the Tutorial Assets as our document background. It is an 850 x 600 px JPG file. Go to File > Open and open star-background.jpg.

2. How to Create and Warp Text

This text effect is made of one layer, so you can save it as a new style in your Styles palette when you are done.

Step 1

Pick the Type Tool and select the Brady Bunch Remastered font. Set the Font Size around 212 pt. Write „SMASH!” with capital letters and with any color.

Step 2

Now we need to stretch the letter spaces. Select the text layer, and then go to the Character panel and change the Tracking to -20. If you can’t see the character panel icon, go to Type > Panels > Character Panel.

Step 3

The last step before we start applying the layer style is to warp our text. Right-click with your mouse on the text layer and select Warp Text from the menu. Set the Style to Arc, select Horizontal, and set the Bend to 30% and Horizontal Distortion to -30%. Now hit OK to apply the changes.

3. How to Create a Cartoon Text Effect

Step 1

Select the layer SMASH! and Double-click the layer to apply the following layer style:

Add a Stroke with these settings:

Size: 10 px
Position: Outside
Blend Mode: Normal
Opacity: 100%
Fill Type: Gradient
Style: Shape Burst
Angle: 0°
Check the Dither box
Set the Gradient with these 2 color stops:
First gradient stop Color #f80000 and Location at 45%
Second gradient stop Color #000000 and Location at 59%

Step 2

Add an Inner Shadow with these settings:

Blend Mode: Normal with the Color #fff000
Opacity: 100%
Uncheck the Use Global Light before setting Angle: 180°
Distance: 3 px
Choke: 100%
Size: 0 px
Check the Anti-aliased box

Step 3

Add a Satin effect with these settings:

Blend Mode: Normal with the Color #fff000
Opacity: 100%
Angle: 90°
Distance: 2 px
Size: 0 px
Check the Anti-aliased box
Uncheck the Invert box, if checked

Step 4

Add a Color Overlay with these settings:

Blend Mode: Multiply
Click on the Color box and choose the color #fff000
Opacity: 100%

Step 5

Add a Pattern Overlay with these settings:

Click on the Pattern box and choose the Red Dots pattern
Opacity: 100%
Scale: 100%

Now you can change the pattern position: just Left-click and Drag your mouse over the text in the document to move the pattern up or down.

Step 6

Add an Outer Glow with these settings:

Blend Mode: Normal
Opacity: 100%
Set Color of glow #fff000
Technique: Softer
Spread: 94%
Size: 11 px
Check the Anti-aliased box

Step 7

As a final step, add a Drop Shadow with these settings:

Blend Mode: Multiply and pick the Color #000000
Opacity: 100%
Uncheck the Use Global Light before setting Angle: 120°
Distance: 8 px
Spread: 100%
Size: 20 px
Check the Anti-aliased box

Hit OK to apply the layer style.

Congratulations! You’re Done!

In this tutorial, you learned how to create a cartoon text effect in Adobe Photoshop.

started out by creating and warping our text, and then we added multiple different effects in order
to create our final text effect.

Sugar skulls are traditional decorative skulls created for the celebration of Día de Muertos—the Mexican Day of the Dead holiday. It’s believed that on November 1 and 2 the souls of the deceased come down to reunite with their loved ones. To celebrate, families create special altars for remembrance of the lost members and decorate them with flowers, candles, food, and little ornamented skulls made of sugar or clay—one skull for each loved one.

Because of their distinctive look, sugar skulls have become an unofficial symbol of the holiday, and as such can be created in various mediums—sculpted, painted, drawn, and even used as a special make-up during the celebration.

Drawing a sugar skull is simple and relaxing. In this tutorial I will show you how to draw a sugar skull step by step, but you don’t have to follow my instructions strictly—feel free to decorate it your own way!

How to Draw a Sugar Skull

Step 1

First you need some kind of a template of a skull. It could be a photo of a real skull or a drawing. Feel free to use an illustration from my tutorial How to Draw a Skull. If you’re drawing digitally, just place it as a layer with low opacity. If you’re drawing traditionally, trace the skull to a new sheet of paper with a pencil. Do it lightly, so that you can erase these lines later.

Step 2

Draw the basic outline of your skull with ink or another dark tool. Sugar skulls tend to be heavily stylized, so feel free to modify the shape as a part of your style.

Step 3

Thick outlines are a good way to accentuate a shape. Give the eye sockets a flower-like edge, and outline the nose.

Step 4

Decorate the borders of the eye sockets with dots to make them less empty.

Step 5

Flowers are a very popular way to decorate a sugar skull! Let’s add some flowers then. Start with a round center.

Step 6

To draw the petals in a regular way, first draw the borders between them.

Step 7

Turn slightly towards the middle of the planned petal to sketch its shape.

Step 8

„Close” the petals by adding a ragged edge.

Step 9

Decorate the petals a little.

Step 10

Add some darkness to create an appealing contrast.

Step 11

Outline the teeth now. Again, no need to draw them realistically. You can draw them as a row of rectangles, or like a simple zip.

Step 12

There’s a lot of empty space between the elements we already have. Let’s fill it with ornaments.

Step 13

Any space left? Let’s add some new shapes:

Step 14

Finally, erase/remove the guide lines of the skull, and clean up the lines. Even a simple decoration will look intricate if you add some variety in the thickness of the lines.

Understanding React Render Props and HOC

Here’s a great post by Aditya Agarwal on the difference between render props and higher-order components in React. I particularly like the demo he chose to explain the two. But, to summarize:

Higher-order components (HOCs) take a component and return a component. So let’s say you have a component called Username that just returns a string of a user’s name and you want to capitalize that somewhere – this is the perfect opportunity to use a HOC that wraps that Username component and changes each character. Just like the excellent tutorial Kingsley Silas wrote up here on CSS-Tricks.

HOCs are particularly useful for when you want to modify a component and then use it in a bunch of places, or to make tiny batches of code to prevent overwhelming a component with too many options and props.

A render prop on the other hand is “a function prop that a component uses to know what to render.” At least, that’s what the React docs say, but it took me a while to figure it out. As far as I understand, it lets you provide a way for a React component (typically one that just has a bunch of data you want to reuse) and give it to another (so a component that then renders that data).

here’s a great example of this in the React docs:

class MouseTracker extends React.Component {
  render() {
    return (
      <div>
        <h1>Move the mouse around!</h1>
        <Mouse render={mouse => (
          <Cat mouse={mouse} />
        )}/>
      </div>
    );
  }
}

What’s happening here is that someone defined a Mouse component in the codebase that provides x + y coordinates based on the position of the user’s mouse. This Mouse component then returns a bunch of data that we store as mouse and then pass it down into the Cat component which is what renders something with that data.

This is great when you want to reuse the data from Mouse but also when you want to pass lots of different types of data into the Cat component. Say you want Cat to render something else based on the type of data you feed into it.

So, to summarize: HOCs and render props are two ways to do similar work. Namely, they can break our code into lots of reusable bits and encourage us to make components that are more flexible in the long run.
