Highcharts is a JavaScript charting library for creating interactive charts in various types (line, spline, area, areaspline, column, bar, pie & scatter).

The library offers a high-level of usability with features like:

tooltip labels displaying info on hovered items
zooming on a specific part of the chart
text rotation on labels for a better readability

Highcharts has an admirable effort in browser compatibility. For standard browsers it uses the canvas element and in some cases SVG for the graphics rendering. In Internet Explorer, graphics are drawn using VML. Besides all major browsers, it works in iPhone & IE6.

The library is offered for free to be used in personal/non-commercial projects & requires a license for commercial ones.

New Google Analytics Code For Better Load Times

Google Analytics has recently announced a new asynchronous tracking code that can "optionally" be replaced with the old one.

The new code does not block the website while it loads which will improve the loading times.

It also aims to provide more accurate results as it can be installed inside <head></head> tags (rather than before the </body> tag) and will be able to collect data from visitors that quit the webpage before it loads fully. This way, "any possible tracking errors from dependencies when the JavaScript not being fully loaded" are also eliminated.

Mollify is an open source web-based file manager, built with PHP & GWT, that can control files hosted in a web server or hosting account.

It has a simple, intuitive & Ajaxed interface that also supports multiple languages.

The application is multi-user (users & user-groups) where a file-level access can be set.

File actions & directory actions can be completed quickly from context popup menus. It is also possible to download files/folders in zipped format.

Mollify can upload multiple files at once & enables to list the contents with sortable columns.

A unique feature offered is the ability to define aliases for folders in order to hide the real folder structure for security purposes.

The interface is totally customizable with CSS. Also, integration of the application with other products is possible as the frontend & backends are independent (they communicate with HTTP/JSON).

fade (for browsing images with a fade effect)
ticker (for continious display of content)

As there are very few free chart icons on the web, the creative team at IconShock improved the set with 5 more icons.

The set contains doughnut, organization, radar charts, a thermometer & data analysis icons.

It is totally free to use them in both personal & commercial projects.

The website also has a simple forwarding function which you can create a link like:

and the user will be redirected to "a.com" or "b.com" depending on the browser type used.

For a web application, It is always a good idea to provide access to it from other platforms like mobile or desktop programs.

As web designers/developers, desktop applications are harder to create considering they have a totally different environment.

In order to fill this gap, we can make use of site-specific browsers which enable us to lock a website inside an application-looking browser that can interact with the system tray/dock & display notifications.

Some usage examples for site-specific browsers:

displaying new orders, support tickets for an e-commerce website
showing system tray alerts when a new visitor visits your website
or even locking your whole application inside a site-specific browser and offering it as a desktop application.

To sum up, they simply help us convert a website into a desktop application. Here are free & mature tools for creating site-specific browsers:

Mozilla Prism (Win-Mac)

Prism is a very easy-to-customize tool that supports Windows & Mac.

Applications created can be:

minimized to system tray/dock & a navigation can be added there
set to display status messages & popups in the system tray/dock
