We’ve all heard about why we should be using responsive design (beyond the fact that it’s current design trend). But the decision to go responsive raises a number of development questions. One of the biggest issues is handling media. And one of the most common features on a media-heavy website is a featured content carousel (or image slider, image rotator, etc). This post will help you find a solution for your responsive slider needs. We’ve gathered a number of the best jQuery responsive image sliders to compare and share.
I use Flexslider more than any other image slider (responsive or not) so it’s a great place to start. Flexslider offers a fullly skin-able and customizable slider that works great across all screen sizes. I use it with both images and images with text/calls to action. It also offers both horizontal and vertical sliding as well as multiple slider support so you can have multiple image sliders on a single page. Definitely gets my vote!
Another great slider that I have personal experience with. Royal Slider has a myriad of configuration options (my favorites being the “Gallery with Visible Nearby Images” or the “Video Slider”). The only thing keeping this plugin from the top spot is that it isn’t free (Flexslider is). However, a very affordable and super-powerful plugin awaits. There’s also a great wordpress version.
Camera slideshow is an open source project, based on Diapo slideshow and offers a variety of skin and customizable options. I’ve never personally used Camera but the documentation looks thorough and the sampel they provide in the demo looks really nice and clean.
Elastic is presented in a tutorial fashion and includes the downloadable code to get you started using it on your site. This plugin has a much more specific look than some of the other plugins mentioned but there are some cool javascript animations being used.
Another premium slider, Advanced Slider is fully responsive, mobile-ready, and can be used with either HTML markup or XML. The plugin also provides an easy to use API to customize it to your specific site. It comes with various pre-built styles that look nice out of the box.
All In One is an Advanced Jquery Slider which comes in 5 flavors: Banner Rotator, Thumbnails Banner, Banner with Playlist, Content Slider, Carousel. It allows you to easily create powerful sliders with animated text using HTML standard tags, making the slider very easy to setup and maintain.
Another tutorial by Codrops on how to create a responsive image gallery with a thumbnail carousel using Elastislide. This slider is inspired by Twitter’s “user gallery” and is more useful for image galleries than a featured content carousel. But a free and great plugin nonetheless.
UnoSlider is a premium jQuery content slider plugin that’s core feature is the number of transition animations offered (the plugin developer claims “unlimited transition animations”). It’s also touch enabled, and offers a variety of other features similar to what’s been mentioned before.
Another great freebie by Codrops (sensing a trend here?). This responsive slider mixes in a little parallax effect (another popular trend). A parallax and responsive site? This plugin is for the ambitious designers out there.
We’ll end with another parallax/responsive combo (this time a premium plugin). Layer Slider offers something really cool and unique: the ability to control an unlimited number of layers with individual animations. Combing this cool functionality with the responsive aspect and you have yourself a pretty powerful and extensible tool. I’ve had quite a bit of fun playing around with this on a few websites.
What other plugins do you use?
I’m sure I’ve left off some really great plugins and tutorials. But that’s where you come in. Let me know what I’ve missed and what plugins are your favorites. Feel free to post links to examples of these plugins in action. We’d love to see your great work!

If you don’t have the time to learn how to create a summer camp logo, you can always try a camp logo maker. Explore an amazing collection of camp logo ideas from Placeit and use the camp logo maker to build your own logo design with just a few clicks! This vintage camp logo is just one of the many examples.
What You’ll Learn in This Adobe Illustrator Tutorial
Hit Control-N to create a new document. Select Pixels from the Units drop-down menu, set the Width and Height to 850 px, and then click that More Settings button. Select RGB for the Color Mode, set the Raster Effects to Screen (72 ppi), and then click Create Document.
Enable the Grid (View > Show Grid) and Snap to Grid (View > Snap to Grid). You will need a grid every 5 px, so simply go to Edit > Preferences > Guides & Grid, enter 5 in the Gridline every box and 1 in the Subdivisions box. Try not to get discouraged by all that grid—it will make your work easier, and keep in mind that you can easily enable or disable it using the Control-„ keyboard shortcut.
You should also open the Info panel (Window > Info) for a live preview with the size and position of your shapes. Don’t forget to set the unit of measurement to pixels from Edit > Preferences > Units. All these options will significantly increase your work speed.
2. How to Create the Sun
Step 1
Pick the Rectangle Tool (M) and focus on your Toolbar. Remove the color from the stroke and then select the fill and set its color to R=191 G=246 B=255.
Move to your artboard and click and drag to create a 280 x 200 px shape—the grid and Snap to Grid will make it easier.
Step 2
Switch to the Ellipse Tool (L) and hold down the Shift key as you click and drag to easily create a 280 px circle. Fill this new shape with R=254 G=209 B=77 and place it exactly as shown in the following image.
Step 3
Make sure that your circle is still selected and go to Object > Path > Offset Path. Set the Offset to -30 px and click OK. Change the fill color of this new shape to R=254 G=193 B=14.
3. How to Create the Tent
Step 1
Using the Selection Tool (V), select your blue rectangle. Press Control-C to copy it and then Shift-Control-V to add a copy in the same place.
Replace the fill color of this new shape with R=114 G=0 B=0 and then switch to the Direct Selection Tool (A). Hold down the Shift key to select the top anchor points and then go to Object > Path > Average. Check the Both box and click OK to easily turn your rectangle into a triangle.
Step 2
Grab the Ellipse Tool (L) and use it to create a 280 x 400 px shape. Fill this ellipse with R=206 G=55 B=37 and place it exactly as shown in the first image.
Switch to the Selection Tool (V), select your triangle, and add a copy in front (Control-C > Control-F). Hold down the Shift key to select this copy along with the ellipse added in this step and click the Intersect button from the Pathfinder panel (Window > Pathfinder).
Step 3
Make sure that your red shape is still selected and add two copies in front (Control-C > Control-F > Control-F). Select just the top copy and press the up arrow key twice and the left arrow key once, which will move your selection 10 px up and 5 px to the left.
Now, hold down Shift to select both copies added in this step, and click the Minus Front button from the Pathfinder panel. Fill the resulting shapes with R=254 G=209 B=77.
Step 4
Hold down the Shift key to select the red shape along with the slim yellow one and go to Object > Transform > Reflect. Check the Vertical box and click the Copy button. Place the newly made shapes as shown in the second image.
4. How to Add the Text
Step 1
Reselect the Rectangle Tool (M) and use it to create a 280 x 60 px shape. Place it as shown in the following image and fill it with R=254 G=209 B=77. Keep this rectangle selected, switch to the Direct Selection Tool (A), and focus on the control panel to set the Corner Radius to 10 px.
Step 2
Finally, select the Type Tool (T) from your toolbar and focus on the Character panel (Window > Type > Character) to set the settings for the text that you’re about to add.
Select the Knicknack font and set the size to 40 pt, and then you can click on your artboard. Type in „SUMMER CAMP”, set the text color to R=206 G=55 B=37, and place it as shown in the following image. With this final touch, your vector summer camp logo is complete.
