1. How to Set Up the Flyer Layout in InDesign

Step 1

Open up Adobe InDesign and head up to File > New > Document. 

Set the Intent to Print and Number of Pages to 1, and uncheck Facing Pages to set up a simple one-page document.

Set the Width of the page to 8.5 in (215.9 mm) and Height to 11 in (279.4 mm), which is a standard flyer size.

Set the Top Margin to 15 mm, Bottom to 18 mm, and Left and Right Margins to 14 mm. Add a Bleed of 5 mm to all edges of the page, and click OK to create the document.

Step 2

Expand the Layers panel (Window > Layers) and double-click on the default Layer 1 name in the panel to open the Layer Options window. Rename the layer Photo and click OK. 

Click on the Create New Layer button at the bottom of the panel to create a second layer. Rename it Shapes. Create a third and final layer and rename this Typography.

Lock both the top Typography layer and Photo layer at the bottom, leaving the Shapes layer unlocked and selected. 

2. How to Create Your Color Palette

Step 1

This flyer design will need a four-color palette, with a dark neutral base color, a light neutral color for text, and two variants, light and dark, of a punchier color. 

To create your palette, expand the Swatches panel (Window > Color > Swatches), and click on the New Swatch button at the bottom of the panel. 

First, let’s create our dark base color. Name the swatch Off-Black, and set the Type to Process and Mode to CMYK. Set the levels to C=90 M=84 Y=47 K=63, and click Add and then OK.

Step 2

Create a further three new CMYK swatches using the same process. 

Here, I’ve created a pale swatch named Grey, C=10 M=7 Y=7 K=0, and two yellow swatches: C=3 M=34 Y=93 K=0 (‘Mustard’) and C=7 M=17 Y=93 K=0 (‘Light Yellow’).

3. How to Create a Geometric Design for Your Flyer

Step 1

Take the Rectangle Tool (M) and drag across the page, extending it up to the bleed on the top, left and bottom edges, and across to roughly the halfway point of the page. Set the Fill to your Off-Black swatch. 

Step 2

Select the Pen Tool (P) and use it to create a diagonal shape extending across the page, from the bottom-left corner to the top of the right side of the page. You want the ribbon to be reasonably thick, with perfectly parallel lines. 

Once you’ve created the rough shape and want to tweak the anchor points, you can use the Direct Selection Tool (A) to select individual points and move them around using the arrow keys. 

Once you’re happy with the shape, adjust the Fill to Light Yellow. 

Step 3

Take the Scissors Tool (C) and snip once where the top of the yellow shape meets the edge of the black rectangle, and once again where the shapes cross over at the bottom. This will split the yellow shape into two sections. 

Select the top-right half of the yellow shape and go to Object > Effects > Transparency. Choose Hard Light from the Mode menu, and pull down the Opacity to around 90%. Click OK. 

Step 4

Take the Pen Tool (P) again and zoom into the top-right corner of the page. Trace the edges of the blank space that remains, creating a sort of triangle shape. 

Set the Fill of this new shape to Off-Black. 

Edit > Copy the triangle shape, and Edit > Paste in Place. 

Return to the Layers panel and click on the small arrow to the left of the Shapes layer’s name, to expand the layer. Select the top ‘polygon’ element…

… and drag it down into the Photo layer below. You’ll have to unlock this layer first to do so. 

Then, with the moved triangle shape still selected, Right-Click (Windows) or Control-Click (Mac) > Content > Graphic to turn the shape into an image frame. We’ll come back to this a bit later.

Step 5

Lock the Photo layer and return to the Shapes layer above. Select the triangle shape that’s sitting on this layer, and go to Object > Effects > Transparency. Reduce the Opacity to 40%, and click OK. 

4. How to Add Photos to Your Flyer Design

Step 1

Lock the Shapes layer and unlock the Photo layer below. 

Take the Pen Tool (P) and create another new shape. This time, focus on the bottom-right section of the page, creating a shape that fills the bottom-right gap as well as the top-right half of the yellow rectangle sitting on the layer above, This will create a rectangle shape with a triangular top. 

Set the Fill of the shape to [None] and then Right-Click (Windows) or Control-Click (Mac) > Content > Graphic to transform the shape into an image frame.

Step 2

With your new image frame still selected, go to File > Place. Choose an image of the property you want to feature, and click Open. Arrange the image (holding down Shift while you scale it) until it fills the whole frame. 

(Here, I’ve used this image of a modern block of flats.)

Step 3

Select the triangular image frame at the top-right of the page and go to File > Place. Choose another image (this might be a nice place to showcase a shot of the interior), and click Open. 

(Here, I’ve used this image of a contemporary kitchen.)

With the black shape over the top of this frame, you’ll have a subtle dark tint across the whole image. 

5. Add Branding and Typography to the Flyer

You might already have a logo for your real estate company, but if not, this minimal houses logo would make a really versatile design for any business in the real estate industry. This is the one I’ve used here for this design.

Step 1

Open your logo up in Adobe Illustrator or a different vector-editing program, and adjust the Fill of the design to White. Then Edit > Copy the vector.

Return to your InDesign document and lock the Photo layer. Unlock the top layer, Typography. Edit > Paste the vector logo directly onto your document. 

Position the logo over the top-right half of the yellow shape. 

I’ve added text below the logo design to complete the brand, setting the Font to Charlevoix Pro, and adjusting the Font Color to [Paper] from the Swatches panel.

Step 2

Take the Rectangle Tool (M) and create a wide, squat rectangle across the top of the page, extending over to the halfway point of the page. Rest the top edge of the shape against the top margin, and set the Fill to Mustard. 

Select the rectangle shape and Edit > Copy, Edit > Paste, moving it over to the right side of the page, meeting the right edge of the original rectangle shape. Go to Object > Effects > Transparency. Set the Mode to Hard Light and reduce the Opacity to 70%. 

Step 3

Create a text frame using the Type Tool (T), and type in ‘FOR SALE’ or whichever header you’d like to use. Set the Font to Charlevoix Pro Medium, Font Size to 37 pt, Tracking to 110 and Font Color to Grey. 

Step 4

You can now start to add more text to your flyer design using the Type Tool (T).

Place text frames below the ribbon header, resting them against the left margin. Set the text in Charlevoix Pro, Size 12 pt, and increase the Tracking to 130 for a contemporary look. Set the Font Color to Grey.

Add more details about facilities, setting the text in Light Yellow. You can create bullet points by highlighting text and then clicking on the Bulleted List button in the Character Formatting Controls panel at the top of the workspace. 

Step 5

You can also place text over the bottom-left corner of the page. This is a good place to format a call-to-action or attention-grabbing offer. 

Here I’ve set text in Charlevoix Pro, as before, and in the Grey swatch for subtle contrast against the yellow background. 

6. How to Customize and Export Your Finished Flyer

Step 1

It’s simple to change the color and branding of your flyer. To adjust the color scheme, create a new pair of light and dark color swatches from the Swatches panel. Here I’ve created a pale apple green and a slightly darker counterpart. 

Then unlock the Shapes layer and select the top ribbon rectangles and large diagonal shape sections. You can adjust the Fill color of these to give your flyer a fresh look. 

(To recreate the look below, I’ve used an image of a modern living room and this photo of a formal city street.)

You can also experiment with the typography. Try changing the font from a clean sans serif like Charlevoix Pro to a more traditional serif like Garamond to make your flyer feel more aspirational and classic. 

Step 2

To export your flyer ready for sending to print, head up to File > Export. 

From the Format drop-down menu at the bottom of the window, choose Adobe PDF (Print) and click Save. 

In the Export to Adobe PDF window that opens, choose [Press Quality] from the Preset menu at the top of the window. 

Step 3

Click on Marks and Bleeds in the left-hand menu. Check the box reading All Printer’s Marks and check Use Document Bleed Settings. 

Click Export to create a print-ready PDF that you can send straight off to the printers. Fantastic work!

Take the Scissors Tool (C) and snip once where the top of the yellow shape meets the edge of the black rectangle, and once again where the shapes cross over at the bottom. This will split the yellow shape into two sections. 

Select the top-right half of the yellow shape and go to Object > Effects > Transparency. Choose Hard Light from the Mode menu, and pull down the Opacity to around 90%. Click OK. 

Step 4

Take the Pen Tool (P) again and zoom into the top-right corner of the page. Trace the edges of the blank space that remains, creating a sort of triangle shape. 

Set the Fill of this new shape to Off-Black. 

Edit > Copy the triangle shape, and Edit > Paste in Place. 

Return to the Layers panel and click on the small arrow to the left of the Shapes layer’s name, to expand the layer. Select the top ‘polygon’ element…

… and drag it down into the Photo layer below. You’ll have to unlock this layer first to do so. 

Then, with the moved triangle shape still selected, Right-Click (Windows) or Control-Click (Mac) > Content > Graphic to turn the shape into an image frame. We’ll come back to this a bit later.

Step 5

Lock the Photo layer and return to the Shapes layer above. Select the triangle shape that’s sitting on this layer, and go to Object > Effects > Transparency. Reduce the Opacity to 40%, and click OK. 

4. How to Add Photos to Your Flyer Design

Step 1

Lock the Shapes layer and unlock the Photo layer below. 

Take the Pen Tool (P) and create another new shape. This time, focus on the bottom-right section of the page, creating a shape that fills the bottom-right gap as well as the top-right half of the yellow rectangle sitting on the layer above, This will create a rectangle shape with a triangular top. 

Set the Fill of the shape to [None] and then Right-Click (Windows) or Control-Click (Mac) > Content > Graphic to transform the shape into an image frame.

Step 2

With your new image frame still selected, go to File > Place. Choose an image of the property you want to feature, and click Open. Arrange the image (holding down Shift while you scale it) until it fills the whole frame. 

(Here, I’ve used this image of a modern block of flats.)

Step 3

Select the triangular image frame at the top-right of the page and go to File > Place. Choose another image (this might be a nice place to showcase a shot of the interior), and click Open. 

(Here, I’ve used this image of a contemporary kitchen.)

With the black shape over the top of this frame, you’ll have a subtle dark tint across the whole image. 

5. Add Branding and Typography to the Flyer

You might already have a logo for your real estate company, but if not, this minimal houses logo would make a really versatile design for any business in the real estate industry. This is the one I’ve used here for this design.

Step 1

Open your logo up in Adobe Illustrator or a different vector-editing program, and adjust the Fill of the design to White. Then Edit > Copy the vector.

Return to your InDesign document and lock the Photo layer. Unlock the top layer, Typography. Edit > Paste the vector logo directly onto your document. 

Position the logo over the top-right half of the yellow shape. 

I’ve added text below the logo design to complete the brand, setting the Font to Charlevoix Pro, and adjusting the Font Color to [Paper] from the Swatches panel.

Step 2

Take the Rectangle Tool (M) and create a wide, squat rectangle across the top of the page, extending over to the halfway point of the page. Rest the top edge of the shape against the top margin, and set the Fill to Mustard. 

Select the rectangle shape and Edit > Copy, Edit > Paste, moving it over to the right side of the page, meeting the right edge of the original rectangle shape. Go to Object > Effects > Transparency. Set the Mode to Hard Light and reduce the Opacity to 70%. 

Step 3

Create a text frame using the Type Tool (T), and type in ‘FOR SALE’ or whichever header you’d like to use. Set the Font to Charlevoix Pro Medium, Font Size to 37 pt, Tracking to 110 and Font Color to Grey. 

Step 4

You can now start to add more text to your flyer design using the Type Tool (T).

Place text frames below the ribbon header, resting them against the left margin. Set the text in Charlevoix Pro, Size 12 pt, and increase the Tracking to 130 for a contemporary look. Set the Font Color to Grey.

Add more details about facilities, setting the text in Light Yellow. You can create bullet points by highlighting text and then clicking on the Bulleted List button in the Character Formatting Controls panel at the top of the workspace. 

Step 5

You can also place text over the bottom-left corner of the page. This is a good place to format a call-to-action or attention-grabbing offer. 

Here I’ve set text in Charlevoix Pro, as before, and in the Grey swatch for subtle contrast against the yellow background. 

6. How to Customize and Export Your Finished Flyer

Step 1

It’s simple to change the color and branding of your flyer. To adjust the color scheme, create a new pair of light and dark color swatches from the Swatches panel. Here I’ve created a pale apple green and a slightly darker counterpart. 

Then unlock the Shapes layer and select the top ribbon rectangles and large diagonal shape sections. You can adjust the Fill color of these to give your flyer a fresh look. 

(To recreate the look below, I’ve used an image of a modern living room and this photo of a formal city street.)

You can also experiment with the typography. Try changing the font from a clean sans serif like Charlevoix Pro to a more traditional serif like Garamond to make your flyer feel more aspirational and classic. 

Step 2

To export your flyer ready for sending to print, head up to File > Export. 

From the Format drop-down menu at the bottom of the window, choose Adobe PDF (Print) and click Save. 

In the Export to Adobe PDF window that opens, choose [Press Quality] from the Preset menu at the top of the window. 

Step 3

Click on Marks and Bleeds in the left-hand menu. Check the box reading All Printer’s Marks and check Use Document Bleed Settings. 

Click Export to create a print-ready PDF that you can send straight off to the printers. Fantastic work!

1. How to Set Up the Flyer Layout in InDesign

Step 1

Open up Adobe InDesign and head up to File > New > Document. 

Set the Intent to Print and Number of Pages to 1, and uncheck Facing Pages to set up a simple one-page document.

Set the Width of the page to 8.5 in (215.9 mm) and Height to 11 in (279.4 mm), which is a standard flyer size.

Set the Top Margin to 15 mm, Bottom to 18 mm, and Left and Right Margins to 14 mm. Add a Bleed of 5 mm to all edges of the page, and click OK to create the document.

Step 2

Expand the Layers panel (Window > Layers) and double-click on the default Layer 1 name in the panel to open the Layer Options window. Rename the layer Photo and click OK. 

Click on the Create New Layer button at the bottom of the panel to create a second layer. Rename it Shapes. Create a third and final layer and rename this Typography.

Lock both the top Typography layer and Photo layer at the bottom, leaving the Shapes layer unlocked and selected. 

2. How to Create Your Color Palette

Step 1

This flyer design will need a four-color palette, with a dark neutral base color, a light neutral color for text, and two variants, light and dark, of a punchier color. 

To create your palette, expand the Swatches panel (Window > Color > Swatches), and click on the New Swatch button at the bottom of the panel. 

First, let’s create our dark base color. Name the swatch Off-Black, and set the Type to Process and Mode to CMYK. Set the levels to C=90 M=84 Y=47 K=63, and click Add and then OK.

Step 2

Create a further three new CMYK swatches using the same process. 

Here, I’ve created a pale swatch named Grey, C=10 M=7 Y=7 K=0, and two yellow swatches: C=3 M=34 Y=93 K=0 (‘Mustard’) and C=7 M=17 Y=93 K=0 (‘Light Yellow’).

3. How to Create a Geometric Design for Your Flyer

Step 1

Take the Rectangle Tool (M) and drag across the page, extending it up to the bleed on the top, left and bottom edges, and across to roughly the halfway point of the page. Set the Fill to your Off-Black swatch. 

Step 2

Select the Pen Tool (P) and use it to create a diagonal shape extending across the page, from the bottom-left corner to the top of the right side of the page. You want the ribbon to be reasonably thick, with perfectly parallel lines. 

Once you’ve created the rough shape and want to tweak the anchor points, you can use the Direct Selection Tool (A) to select individual points and move them around using the arrow keys. 

Once you’re happy with the shape, adjust the Fill to Light Yellow. 

Step 3

Take the Scissors Tool (C) and snip once where the top of the yellow shape meets the edge of the black rectangle, and once again where the shapes cross over at the bottom. This will split the yellow shape into two sections. 

Select the top-right half of the yellow shape and go to Object > Effects > Transparency. Choose Hard Light from the Mode menu, and pull down the Opacity to around 90%. Click OK. 

Step 4

Take the Pen Tool (P) again and zoom into the top-right corner of the page. Trace the edges of the blank space that remains, creating a sort of triangle shape. 

Set the Fill of this new shape to Off-Black. 

Edit > Copy the triangle shape, and Edit > Paste in Place. 

Return to the Layers panel and click on the small arrow to the left of the Shapes layer’s name, to expand the layer. Select the top ‘polygon’ element…

… and drag it down into the Photo layer below. You’ll have to unlock this layer first to do so. 

Then, with the moved triangle shape still selected, Right-Click (Windows) or Control-Click (Mac) > Content > Graphic to turn the shape into an image frame. We’ll come back to this a bit later.

Step 5

Lock the Photo layer and return to the Shapes layer above. Select the triangle shape that’s sitting on this layer, and go to Object > Effects > Transparency. Reduce the Opacity to 40%, and click OK. 

4. How to Add Photos to Your Flyer Design

Step 1

Lock the Shapes layer and unlock the Photo layer below. 

Take the Pen Tool (P) and create another new shape. This time, focus on the bottom-right section of the page, creating a shape that fills the bottom-right gap as well as the top-right half of the yellow rectangle sitting on the layer above, This will create a rectangle shape with a triangular top.

There are many software packages available to enable you to design flyer templates, but today we will be using Adobe Illustrator in a step-by-step guide to custom designing a Valentine’s Dinner Menu flyer!

1. The Fonts You Need to Design Your Flyer Menu

Let’s jump-start the project by setting up our menu flyer template. You’ll need to download the following font files from Font Squirrel: 

• Nickainley
• Grand Hotel
• Passion One
• Josefin Sans
• Montserrat

Install the fonts on your system, and let’s get started with our flyer template!

2. How to Set Up the Flyer Menu Design

Open Adobe Illustrator.

Click ’Create New’, and select ’Print’. First, we are going to customize the size of our flyer template. Set up the document to the following:

• Name: Val_Flyer_Menu
• Number of Artboards: 1
• Orientation: Portrait
• Width: 13.80 cm
• Height: 21.10 cm

Select More Settings and set Bleed: 0.2 cm. Once you Create Document, the bleed lines will appear as red lines around the artboard. These lines indicate how far the artwork can extend so when cutting the flyers, no white edges will appear.

3. How to Design the Menu Flyer Background

Step 1

We begin by setting up our layers from the Layers panel: Window > Layers.

Rename 'Layer 1′ to 'BACKGROUND’. 

Click the Create New Layer option from the Layers panel, and create another two layers, 'GRAPHICS’ and 'TYPE’.

Move on to the 'BACKGROUND’ layer to start.

Step 2

Turn on the Smart Guides (Command-U).

Then select the Rectangle Tool (M) with a color fill of #EE3138, and draw a rectangle to cover the artboard from one bleed line edge to the other, using the Smart Guides.

Step 3

Next, let’s create a polka-dot pattern for the design template.

Open the Swatches panel: Windows > Swatches. Choose a color fill of #F48c93 and then select the Ellipse Tool (L). Hold down the Shift key and draw a 0.06 x 0.06 cm ellipse.

With the ellipse selected, Object > Pattern > Make.

The Pattern Options dialog box will appear. Set the options to:

• Tile Type: Brick by Row 
• Width: 0.5 cm
• Height: 0.5 cm

The new polka-dot pattern will appear instantly in the Swatches panel. You can delete the ellipse after the pattern is created.

Step 4

Let’s duplicate the red background rectangle.

Copy (Command-C) and Paste in Front (Command-F) to duplicate the same rectangle on top of the original, and apply the polka-dot pattern we created as a fill.

Then select the Rectangle Tool (M) with a white fill and draw a rectangle of about 10.7 x 18.6 cm.

Open the Align panel: Windows > Align.

Select Align to Artboard from the Align To drop-down menu, and Horizontal & Vertical Align Center the rectangle.

Step 5

Select the white rectangle with the Direct Selection Tool (A), and the Live Corner widgets will appear next to each corner on the rectangle.

Drag the corner to round about 0.62 cm.

Then, with the shape still selected, Object Path > Offset Path:

• Offset: -0.25cm
• Joins: Round 
• OK

Step 6

Open the Stroke panel (Window > Stroke). Give the new offset rectangle a null fill, Stroke Weight of 2.5 pt, and color of #F48284.

Now let’s duplicate our artboard to create the back side of our design.

Open the Artboards panel: Windows > Artboards.

Select the New Artboard icon from panel to duplicate the design of the first artboard. Give the offset inner rectangle a stroke color of #525627.

Lock the ’BACKGROUND’ layer from the Layers panel and move on to the 'GRAPHICS’ layer.

4. How to Illustrate the Valentine’s Menu Flyer Graphics

Step 1

Let’s move on to creating some graphics to support the theme of our flyer. I want to create a heart-shaped plate with a knife and fork.

Select the Pen Tool (P) from the Tools panel. Choose a fill color of #F9BCC7, null stroke, and draw half a heart shape.

Take the Selection Tool (V) to select the heart shape. Copy (Command-C) and Paste in Front (Command-F), to duplicate the shape on top of the original.

Then take the Reflect Tool (O). Set the blue center reference point at the center, as shown below; Option-Shift-Drag and release when the half heart is mirrored into position.

Select both halves, and then open the Pathfinder panel: Windows > Pathfinder.

Click the Shape Modes: Unite icon from the Pathfinder panel, to make a compound shape.

Step 2

Select the heart, position it on the upper side of the first artboard, and Horizontal Align Center from the Align panel.

Object > Path > Offset Path, with these settings:

• Offset: -0.4 cm
• Joins: Miter
• Miter Limit: 4
• OK

Give the offset heart a Stroke Weight 2 pt, null fill, and stroke color of #FACCD7 .

Step 3

Next, let’s create a knife and fork for our dinner menu theme.

Select the Pen Tool (P), and with the use of Smart Guides, draw a polygon-shaped knife and fork, with a fill color of #F16777.

Then take the Direct Selection Tool (A). Select the fork’s neck top and handle to curve its Live Corner widgets, as shown below.

Round them to the highest possible point, which will be highlighted in red.

Then select the knife and round all Live Corner widgets to the highest point.

Step 4

To create the fork prongs, select the Rounded Rectangle Tool, and draw a long, vertical rectangle with a white fill. Use the Drag-Drop action to duplicate the rounded rectangle shape across, as shown below. Select the rounded rectangle, hold the Shift and Alt keys, and drag the object across with the Selection Tool (V). This will create a duplicate. Transform Again (Command-D).

From the Pathfinder panel, Shape Modes: Unite the rounded rectangles.

Then select both the fork and the three rounded rectangle shapes and Shape Modes: Minus Front.

Now we have a fork!

Step 5

Place the knife and fork at the base of the heart-shaped plate.

Object > Transform > Rotate the fork by 60° and the knife by -55°.

Align them as you see fit.

Step 6

Let’s place a heart between the fork and the knife.

Drag and drop to duplicate the heart, hold down the Shift-Alt keys, and Drag down to duplicate. Scale it down using the Free Transform Tool (E), while holding the Shift-Alt keys. Give the new heart a golden fill color of #E0BD6f.

Then select the Rectangle Tool (M) with a fill color of #525627 and add a strip banner of about 14 x 2.5 cm from one bleed line edge to the other.

Step 7

Now let’s add some minor graphics to align our text space on the flyer design. We will create ribbon ends for the 'Flyer Date’, and bar brackets for the catchy offer.

Take the Rectangle Tool (M), and draw a 1 x 1 cm square with the golden fill color #E0BD6f.

Object > Path > Add Anchor Points. Select the center left anchor and drag it inwards to create a ribbon effect.

Use the Reflect Tool (O) to mirror the ribbon. Set the blue center reference point at the center, as shown below; Option-Shift-Drag and release into position.

Group (Command-G) the two ribbon ends and from the Align panel, Horizontal Align Center.

Step 8

For the bars, it’s super easy. Use the Rectangle Tool (M), and draw an approx 0.14 x 1.60 cm bar, with the golden fill color #E0BD6f.

Use the Reflect Tool (O) to set the blue center reference point and Option-Shift-Drag and release into the mirrored position.

Group (Command-G) the bars and Horizontal Align Center from the Align panel.

Step 9

For the back side of the flyer template, we will keep it simple with one header ribbon and a heart underneath.

Use the Rectangle Tool (M) to draw a 6.44 x 0.88 cm rectangle with a golden fill color #E0BD6f.

Object > Path > Add Anchor Points and tweak the ends inwards.

Then select the golden little heart from the front artboard, drag and drop to the back artboard, and scale down using the Free Transform Tool (E), with the Shift and Alt keys pressed.

Select the ribbon and heart and from the Align panel, Horizontal Align Center.

5. How to Add Type & Lay Out the Flyer Menu Template 

Step 1

Lock the 'GRAPHICS’ layer from the Layers panel, and move on to the 'TYPE’ layer.

Now we can add type to our menu flyer. Let’s add the words 'Happy ValenDine’s Day’, under one another, on top of the heart-plate.

Open the Character panel: Window > Type > Character

Select the Type Tool from the Tools panel. We are going to create point text, not a bounding box, for the first word 'Happy’.

Click on the top center of the heart shape and type in 'Happy’ with Font: Nickainley set at Font Size 49.6 pt. Choose Align Center from Paragraph on the top menu.

Select a fill and stroke color of #D91F32, Stroke weight set at 1 pt.

Use the same setting but click at the base-center of the heart shape and type in 'Day’. Now let’s add 'ValenDine’s’ between the two pieces of text. Remove the stroke color. 

Type 'ValenDine’s’, and from the Character panel:

• Font: Grand Hotel 
• Font Size: 89.19 pt 
• Tracking: -25

Step 2

Next, let’s add a slight arc to the type.

Select the 'ValenDine’s’ text and Effect > Warp > Arc at 28°. You can reposition this text by using the Selection Tool (V) to drag it down slightly.

Select the 'Happy’ text and Effect > Warp > Arc at 10°. 

Then select all three pieces of text and Horizontal Align Center from the Align panel.

Step 3

Next, let’s add the date of our event flyer. Select the Type Tool, and draw a type bounding box between the ribbon ends.

Type in ’14 FEB’ with fill color #EE3138, using the Character panel settings:

• Font: Passion One (Bold)
• Font Size: 36 pt 
• Tracking: 25

And below draw another type bounding box, aligned from one ribbon end to the other.

Type in the catchy offer of 'FREE GLASS OF BUBBLY’ with fill color #E0BD6F, using the Character panel settings:

• Font: Josefin Sans (Semi Bold)
• Font Size: 14.24 pt 
• Tracking: -75

Step 4

Now let’s add our main offer for the evening… a '3 Course Meal for 60$’.

Take the Type Tool and create a point text, on the side of the left bar.

From the menu, select Paragraph > Align Right.

Type in '3′ with Fill color #EE3138, using the Character panel settings:

• Font: Passion One (Bold)
• Font Size: 67.15 pt 

Then create a type bounding box between the gold bars. Select Paragraph > Align Right.

Type in '3′ with Fill color #525627, using the Character panel settings:

• Font: Montserrat
• Font Size: 20 pt 
• Leading: 24 pt
• Tracking: 54

Step 5

Next, let’s add our dinner’s special cost.

With the Type Tool, create a point type text, on the side of the right bar. Select Paragraph > Align Right

Type in ’60$’ with fill color #EE3138, using the Character panel settings:

• Font: Passion One (Bold)
• Font Size: 55.55 pt 
• Tracking: 25

Then we need to add the location of our restaurant underneath.

Create a type bounding box aligned between the gold bars. Select Paragraph > Align Center.

Type in the dummy location (# Street, Town, City) with fill color #F16777, using the Character panel settings:

• Font: Passion One (Bold)
• Font Size: 15.18 pt 
• Tracking: 50

Step 6

Next, let’s add a dotted line leading to the 60$.

Select the Pen Tool (P), with null fill and stroke color #F16777.

From the Stroke panel, set the following:

• Stroke Weight: 5 pt
• Cap: Round Cap
• Corner: Round Join
• Check Dashed Line
• Dash: 0 pt
• Gap: 10 pt 

Step 7

Let’s finish off the menu flyer’s front side, by adding our Restaurant + Website + Booking Info on the bottom of the flyer template.

With the Type Tool, create a point text, within the green bar.

From the menu bar, select Paragraph > Align Center.

Type in 'Restaurant’ with a white fill color and the Character panel settings:

• Font: Grand Hotel
• Font Size: 42.45 pt 

Underneath, create another point text center aligned, with white fill, and add the website ’www.restaurant.com’.

Type in 'Restaurant’ with white fill color and the Character panel settings:

• Font: Montserrat (Light)
• Font Size: 14.42 pt 
• Tracking: 160

Finally, type 'ADVANCED BOOKING REQUIRED’ with fill color #525627, with the settings:

• Font: Montserrat
• Font Size: 12.58 pt 

Step 8

Let’s move on to the second artboard for the back of the flyer.

Take the Type Tool and create a type bounding box, within the golden ribbon. Select Paragraph > Align Center.

Type in 'SPECIAL MENU’ with white fill color and the Character panel settings:

• Font: Montserrat 
• Font Size: 21 pt 

Step 9

For the final bits, we will create our special dinner menu layout.

We have three sections: the appetisers, main dishes, and dessert. So we need to create three sections with a Title bounding box, followed by three dishes and the description of each plate.

So let’s take the Type Tool and create a type bounding box in the top center, the width of the ribbon for the title.

With a fill color of #F16777, Paragraph > Align Center, type in temporarily 'Title’ with the settings:

• Font: Grand Hotel
• Font Size: 24.57 pt 

Slightly below, add a point text with fill color #525627, Paragraph > Align Center, and type in temporarily 'PLATE’ with the settings:

• Font: Montserrat (Light)
• Font Size: 12.28 pt 

For the menu plate descriptions, use a grey fill color #969696, Paragraph > Align Center, and type in the dummy text 'Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adig et elit’ with the settings:

• Font: Josefin Sans (Light Italic)
• Font Size: 9 pt 

Step 10

Take the Selection Tool (V) and select the 'Plate’ text and description. Hold the Shift and Alt keys, and drag and drop about 1 cm down.

Transform Again (Command-D) so we have three plates on our menu flyer.

Step 11

Then select the 'Title’ and the three plates with their respective descriptions. Hold the Shift-Alt keys, and drag and drop about 5 cm down.

Transform Again (Command-D) or manually drag and drop with the help of Smart Guides.

Step 12

Now that the layout is done, all you need to do is fill out the menu items for the flyer, using the Type Tool.

File > Save As. Save it in two formats: one in (.ai)” file format by selecting Adobe Illustrator from the Format drop-down menu in the Save As dialog box, and another Save As Adobe PDF format.

Post pobrano z: How to Make a Valentine’s Dinner Restaurant Menu Flyer Template

Do you have a fascinating dinner event in mind and wish to kick off the celebration with a catchy restaurant menu design? Great! There are many software packages available to enable you to design flyer templates, but today we will be using Adobe Illustrator in a step-by-step guide to custom designing a Valentine’s Dinner Menu flyer!

1. The Fonts You Need to Design Your Flyer Menu

Let’s jump-start the project by setting up our menu flyer template. You’ll need to download the following font files from Font Squirrel: 

• Nickainley
• Grand Hotel
• Passion One
• Josefin Sans
• Montserrat

Install the fonts on your system, and let’s get started with our flyer template!

2. How to Set Up the Flyer Menu Design

Open Adobe Illustrator.

Click ’Create New’, and select ’Print’. First, we are going to customize the size of our flyer template. Set up the document to the following:

• Name: Val_Flyer_Menu
• Number of Artboards: 1
• Orientation: Portrait
• Width: 13.80 cm
• Height: 21.10 cm

Select More Settings and set Bleed: 0.2 cm. Once you Create Document, the bleed lines will appear as red lines around the artboard. These lines indicate how far the artwork can extend so when cutting the flyers, no white edges will appear.

3. How to Design the Menu Flyer Background

Step 1

We begin by setting up our layers from the Layers panel: Window > Layers.

Rename 'Layer 1′ to 'BACKGROUND’. 

Click the Create New Layer option from the Layers panel, and create another two layers, 'GRAPHICS’ and 'TYPE’.

Move on to the 'BACKGROUND’ layer to start.

Step 2

Turn on the Smart Guides (Command-U).

Then select the Rectangle Tool (M) with a color fill of #EE3138, and draw a rectangle to cover the artboard from one bleed line edge to the other, using the Smart Guides.

Step 3

Next, let’s create a polka-dot pattern for the design template.

Open the Swatches panel: Windows > Swatches. Choose a color fill of #F48c93 and then select the Ellipse Tool (L). Hold down the Shift key and draw a 0.06 x 0.06 cm ellipse.

With the ellipse selected, Object > Pattern > Make.

The Pattern Options dialog box will appear. Set the options to:

• Tile Type: Brick by Row 
• Width: 0.5 cm
• Height: 0.5 cm

The new polka-dot pattern will appear instantly in the Swatches panel. You can delete the ellipse after the pattern is created.

Step 4

Let’s duplicate the red background rectangle.

Copy (Command-C) and Paste in Front (Command-F) to duplicate the same rectangle on top of the original, and apply the polka-dot pattern we created as a fill.

Then select the Rectangle Tool (M) with a white fill and draw a rectangle of about 10.7 x 18.6 cm.

Open the Align panel: Windows > Align.

Select Align to Artboard from the Align To drop-down menu, and Horizontal & Vertical Align Center the rectangle.

Step 5

Select the white rectangle with the Direct Selection Tool (A), and the Live Corner widgets will appear next to each corner on the rectangle.

Drag the corner to round about 0.62 cm.

Then, with the shape still selected, Object Path > Offset Path:

• Offset: -0.25cm
• Joins: Round 
• OK

Step 6

Open the Stroke panel (Window > Stroke). Give the new offset rectangle a null fill, Stroke Weight of 2.5 pt, and color of #F48284.

Now let’s duplicate our artboard to create the back side of our design.

Open the Artboards panel: Windows > Artboards.

Select the New Artboard icon from panel to duplicate the design of the first artboard. Give the offset inner rectangle a stroke color of #525627.

Lock the ’BACKGROUND’ layer from the Layers panel and move on to the 'GRAPHICS’ layer.

4. How to Illustrate the Valentine’s Menu Flyer Graphics

Step 1

Let’s move on to creating some graphics to support the theme of our flyer. I want to create a heart-shaped plate with a knife and fork.

Select the Pen Tool (P) from the Tools panel. Choose a fill color of #F9BCC7, null stroke, and draw half a heart shape.

Take the Selection Tool (V) to select the heart shape. Copy (Command-C) and Paste in Front (Command-F), to duplicate the shape on top of the original.

Then take the Reflect Tool (O). Set the blue center reference point at the center, as shown below; Option-Shift-Drag and release when the half heart is mirrored into position.

Select both halves, and then open the Pathfinder panel: Windows > Pathfinder.

Click the Shape Modes: Unite icon from the Pathfinder panel, to make a compound shape.

Step 2

Select the heart, position it on the upper side of the first artboard, and Horizontal Align Center from the Align panel.

Object > Path > Offset Path, with these settings:

• Offset: -0.4 cm
• Joins: Miter
• Miter Limit: 4
• OK

Give the offset heart a Stroke Weight 2 pt, null fill, and stroke color of #FACCD7 .

Step 3

Next, let’s create a knife and fork for our dinner menu theme.

Select the Pen Tool (P), and with the use of Smart Guides, draw a polygon-shaped knife and fork, with a fill color of #F16777.

Then take the Direct Selection Tool (A). Select the fork’s neck top and handle to curve its Live Corner widgets, as shown below.

Round them to the highest possible point, which will be highlighted in red.

Then select the knife and round all Live Corner widgets to the highest point.

Step 4

To create the fork prongs, select the Rounded Rectangle Tool, and draw a long, vertical rectangle with a white fill. Use the Drag-Drop action to duplicate the rounded rectangle shape across, as shown below. Select the rounded rectangle, hold the Shift and Alt keys, and drag the object across with the Selection Tool (V). This will create a duplicate. Transform Again (Command-D).

From the Pathfinder panel, Shape Modes: Unite the rounded rectangles.

Then select both the fork and the three rounded rectangle shapes and Shape Modes: Minus Front.

Now we have a fork!

Step 5

Place the knife and fork at the base of the heart-shaped plate.

Object > Transform > Rotate the fork by 60° and the knife by -55°.

Align them as you see fit.

Step 6

Let’s place a heart between the fork and the knife.

Drag and drop to duplicate the heart, hold down the Shift-Alt keys, and Drag down to duplicate. Scale it down using the Free Transform Tool (E), while holding the Shift-Alt keys. Give the new heart a golden fill color of #E0BD6f.

Then select the Rectangle Tool (M) with a fill color of #525627 and add a strip banner of about 14 x 2.5 cm from one bleed line edge to the other.

Step 7

Now let’s add some minor graphics to align our text space on the flyer design. We will create ribbon ends for the 'Flyer Date’, and bar brackets for the catchy offer.

Take the Rectangle Tool (M), and draw a 1 x 1 cm square with the golden fill color #E0BD6f.

Object > Path > Add Anchor Points. Select the center left anchor and drag it inwards to create a ribbon effect.

Use the Reflect Tool (O) to mirror the ribbon. Set the blue center reference point at the center, as shown below; Option-Shift-Drag and release into position.

Group (Command-G) the two ribbon ends and from the Align panel, Horizontal Align Center.

Step 8

For the bars, it’s super easy. Use the Rectangle Tool (M), and draw an approx 0.14 x 1.60 cm bar, with the golden fill color #E0BD6f.

Use the Reflect Tool (O) to set the blue center reference point and Option-Shift-Drag and release into the mirrored position.

Group (Command-G) the bars and Horizontal Align Center from the Align panel.

Step 9

For the back side of the flyer template, we will keep it simple with one header ribbon and a heart underneath.

Use the Rectangle Tool (M) to draw a 6.44 x 0.88 cm rectangle with a golden fill color #E0BD6f.

Object > Path > Add Anchor Points and tweak the ends inwards.

Then select the golden little heart from the front artboard, drag and drop to the back artboard, and scale down using the Free Transform Tool (E), with the Shift and Alt keys pressed.

Select the ribbon and heart and from the Align panel, Horizontal Align Center.

5. How to Add Type & Lay Out the Flyer Menu Template 

Step 1

Lock the 'GRAPHICS’ layer from the Layers panel, and move on to the 'TYPE’ layer.

Now we can add type to our menu flyer. Let’s add the words 'Happy ValenDine’s Day’, under one another, on top of the heart-plate.

Open the Character panel: Window > Type > Character

Select the Type Tool from the Tools panel. We are going to create point text, not a bounding box, for the first word 'Happy’.

Click on the top center of the heart shape and type in 'Happy’ with Font: Nickainley set at Font Size 49.6 pt. Choose Align Center from Paragraph on the top menu.

Select a fill and stroke color of #D91F32, Stroke weight set at 1 pt.

Use the same setting but click at the base-center of the heart shape and type in 'Day’. Now let’s add 'ValenDine’s’ between the two pieces of text. Remove the stroke color. 

Type 'ValenDine’s’, and from the Character panel:

• Font: Grand Hotel 
• Font Size: 89.19 pt 
• Tracking: -25

Step 2

Next, let’s add a slight arc to the type.

Select the 'ValenDine’s’ text and Effect > Warp > Arc at 28°. You can reposition this text by using the Selection Tool (V) to drag it down slightly.

Select the 'Happy’ text and Effect > Warp > Arc at 10°. 

Then select all three pieces of text and Horizontal Align Center from the Align panel.

Step 3

Next, let’s add the date of our event flyer. Select the Type Tool, and draw a type bounding box between the ribbon ends.

Type in ’14 FEB’ with fill color #EE3138, using the Character panel settings:

• Font: Passion One (Bold)
• Font Size: 36 pt 
• Tracking: 25

And below draw another type bounding box, aligned from one ribbon end to the other.

Type in the catchy offer of 'FREE GLASS OF BUBBLY’ with fill color #E0BD6F, using the Character panel settings:

Next, let’s add a dotted line leading to the 60$.

Select the Pen Tool (P), with null fill and stroke color #F16777.

From the Stroke panel, set the following:

• Stroke Weight: 5 pt
• Cap: Round Cap
• Corner: Round Join
• Check Dashed Line
• Dash: 0 pt
• Gap: 10 pt 

Step 7

Let’s finish off the menu flyer’s front side, by adding our Restaurant + Website + Booking Info on the bottom of the flyer template.

With the Type Tool, create a point text, within the green bar.

From the menu bar, select Paragraph > Align Center.

Type in 'Restaurant’ with a white fill color and the Character panel settings:

• Font: Grand Hotel
• Font Size: 42.45 pt 

Underneath, create another point text center aligned, with white fill, and add the website ’www.restaurant.com’.

Type in 'Restaurant’ with white fill color and the Character panel settings:

• Font: Montserrat (Light)
• Font Size: 14.42 pt 
• Tracking: 160

Finally, type 'ADVANCED BOOKING REQUIRED’ with fill color #525627, with the settings:

• Font: Montserrat
• Font Size: 12.58 pt 

Step 8

Let’s move on to the second artboard for the back of the flyer.

Take the Type Tool and create a type bounding box, within the golden ribbon. Select Paragraph > Align Center.

Type in 'SPECIAL MENU’ with white fill color and the Character panel settings:

• Font: Montserrat 
• Font Size: 21 pt 

Step 9

For the final bits, we will create our special dinner menu layout.

4. How to Illustrate the Valentine’s Menu Flyer Graphics

Step 1

Give the offset heart a Stroke Weight 2 pt, null fill, and stroke color of #FACCD7 .

Step 3

Next, let’s create a knife and fork for our dinner menu theme.

Select the Pen Tool (P), and with the use of Smart Guides, draw a polygon-shaped knife and fork, with a fill color of #F16777.

Then take the Direct Selection Tool (A). Select the fork’s neck top and handle to curve its Live Corner widgets, as shown below.

Round them to the highest possible point, which will be highlighted in red.

Then select the knife and round all Live Corner widgets to the highest point.

Step 4

To create the fork prongs, select the Rounded Rectangle Tool, and draw a long, vertical rectangle with a white fill. Use the Drag-Drop action to duplicate the rounded rectangle shape across, as shown below. Select the rounded rectangle, hold the Shift and Alt keys, and drag the object across with the Selection Tool (V). This will create a duplicate. Transform Again (Command-D).

From the Pathfinder panel, Shape Modes: Unite the rounded rectangles.

Then select both the fork and the three rounded rectangle shapes and Shape Modes: Minus Front.

Now we have a fork!

Step 5

Place the knife and fork at the base of the heart-shaped plate.

Object > Transform > Rotate the fork by 60° and the knife by -55°.

Align them as you see fit.

Step 6

Let’s place a heart between the fork and the knife.

Drag and drop to duplicate the heart, hold down the Shift-Alt keys, and Drag down to duplicate. Scale it down using the Free Transform Tool (E), while holding the Shift-Alt keys. Give the new heart a golden fill color of #E0BD6f.

Then select the Rectangle Tool (M) with a fill color of #525627 and add a strip banner of about 14 x 2.5 cm from one bleed line edge to the other.

Step 7

Now let’s add some minor graphics to align our text space on the flyer design. We will create ribbon ends for the 'Flyer Date’, and bar brackets for the catchy offer.

Take the Rectangle Tool (M), and draw a 1 x 1 cm square with the golden fill color #E0BD6f.

Object > Path > Add Anchor Points. Select the center left anchor and drag it inwards to create a ribbon effect.

Use the Reflect Tool (O) to mirror the ribbon. Set the blue center reference point at the center, as shown below; Option-Shift-Drag and release into position.

Group (Command-G) the two ribbon ends and from the Align panel, Horizontal Align Center.

Step 8

For the bars, it’s super easy. Use the Rectangle Tool (M), and draw an approx 0.14 x 1.60 cm bar, with the golden fill color #E0BD6f.

Use the Reflect Tool (O) to set the blue center reference point and Option-Shift-Drag and release into the mirrored position.

Group (Command-G) the bars and Horizontal Align Center from the Align panel.

Step 9

For the back side of the flyer template, we will keep it simple with one header ribbon and a heart underneath.

Use the Rectangle Tool (M) to draw a 6.44 x 0.88 cm rectangle with a golden fill color #E0BD6f.

Object > Path > Add Anchor Points and tweak the ends inwards.

Then select the golden little heart from the front artboard, drag and drop to the back artboard, and scale down using the Free Transform Tool (E), with the Shift and Alt keys pressed.

Select the ribbon and heart and from the Align panel, Horizontal Align Center.

5. How to Add Type & Lay Out the Flyer Menu Template 

Step 1

Lock the 'GRAPHICS’ layer from the Layers panel, and move on to the 'TYPE’ layer.

Now we can add type to our menu flyer. Let’s add the words 'Happy ValenDine’s Day’, under one another, on top of the heart-plate.

Open the Character panel: Window > Type > Character

Select the Type Tool from the Tools panel. We are going to create point text, not a bounding box, for the first word 'Happy’.

Click on the top center of the heart shape and type in 'Happy’ with Font: Nickainley set at Font Size 49.6 pt. Choose Align Center from Paragraph on the top menu.

Select a fill and stroke color of #D91F32, Stroke weight set at 1 pt.

Use the same setting but click at the base-center of the heart shape and type in 'Day’. Now let’s add 'ValenDine’s’ between the two pieces of text. Remove the stroke color. 

Type 'ValenDine’s’, and from the Character panel:

• Font: Grand Hotel 
• Font Size: 89.19 pt 
• Tracking: -25

Step 2

Next, let’s add a slight arc to the type.

Select the 'ValenDine’s’ text and Effect > Warp > Arc at 28°. You can reposition this text by using the Selection Tool (V) to drag it down slightly.

Select the 'Happy’ text and Effect > Warp > Arc at 10°. 

Then select all three pieces of text and Horizontal Align Center from the Align panel.

Step 3

Next, let’s add the date of our event flyer. Select the Type Tool, and draw a type bounding box between the ribbon ends.

Type in ’14 FEB’ with fill color #EE3138, using the Character panel settings:

• Font: Passion One (Bold)
• Font Size: 36 pt 
• Tracking: 25

And below draw another type bounding box, aligned from one ribbon end to the other.

Type in the catchy offer of 'FREE GLASS OF BUBBLY’ with fill color #E0BD6F, using the Character panel settings:

• Font: Josefin Sans (Semi Bold)
• Font Size: 14.24 pt 
• Tracking: -75

Step 4

Now let’s add our main offer for the evening… a '3 Course Meal for 60$’.

Take the Type Tool and create a point text, on the side of the left bar.

From the menu, select Paragraph > Align Right.

Type in '3′ with Fill color #EE3138, using the Character panel settings:

• Font: Passion One (Bold)
• Font Size: 67.15 pt 

Then create a type bounding box between the gold bars. Select Paragraph > Align Right.

Type in '3′ with Fill color #525627, using the Character panel settings:

• Font: Montserrat
• Font Size: 20 pt 
• Leading: 24 pt
• Tracking: 54

Step 5

Next, let’s add our dinner’s special cost.

With the Type Tool, create a point type text, on the side of the right bar. Select Paragraph > Align Right

Type in ’60$’ with fill color #EE3138, using the Character panel settings:

• Font: Passion One (Bold)
• Font Size: 55.55 pt 
• Tracking: 25

Then we need to add the location of our restaurant underneath.

Create a type bounding box aligned between the gold bars. Select Paragraph > Align Center.

Type in the dummy location (# Street, Town, City) with fill color #F16777, using the Character panel settings:

• Font: Passion One (Bold)
• Font Size: 15.18 pt 
• Tracking: 50

Step 6

Next, let’s add a dotted line leading to the 60$.

Select the Pen Tool (P), with null fill and stroke color #F16777.

From the Stroke panel, set the following:

• Stroke Weight: 5 pt
• Cap: Round Cap
• Corner: Round Join
• Check Dashed Line
• Dash: 0 pt
• Gap: 10 pt 

Step 7

Let’s finish off the menu flyer’s front side, by adding our Restaurant + Website + Booking Info on the bottom of the flyer template.

With the Type Tool, create a point text, within the green bar.

From the menu bar, select Paragraph > Align Center.

Type in 'Restaurant’ with a white fill color and the Character panel settings:

• Font: Grand Hotel
• Font Size: 42.45 pt 

Underneath, create another point text center aligned, with white fill, and add the website ’www.restaurant.com’.

Type in 'Restaurant’ with white fill color and the Character panel settings:

• Font: Montserrat (Light)
• Font Size: 14.42 pt 
• Tracking: 160

Finally, type 'ADVANCED BOOKING REQUIRED’ with fill color #525627, with the settings:

• Font: Montserrat
• Font Size: 12.58 pt 

Step 8

Let’s move on to the second artboard for the back of the flyer.

Take the Type Tool and create a type bounding box, within the golden ribbon. Select Paragraph > Align Center.

Type in 'SPECIAL MENU’ with white fill color and the Character panel settings:

• Font: Montserrat 
• Font Size: 21 pt 

Step 9

For the final bits, we will create our special dinner menu layout.

We have three sections: the appetisers, main dishes, and dessert. So we need to create three sections with a Title bounding box, followed by three dishes and the description of each plate.

So let’s take the Type Tool and create a type bounding box in the top center, the width of the ribbon for the title.

With a fill color of #F16777, Paragraph > Align Center, type in temporarily 'Title’ with the settings:

• Font: Grand Hotel
• Font Size: 24.57 pt 

Slightly below, add a point text with fill color #525627, Paragraph > Align Center, and type in temporarily 'PLATE’ with the settings:

• Font: Montserrat (Light)
• Font Size: 12.28 pt 

For the menu plate descriptions, use a grey fill color #969696, Paragraph > Align Center, and type in the dummy text 'Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adig et elit’ with the settings:

• Font: Josefin Sans (Light Italic)
• Font Size: 9 pt 

Step 10

Take the Selection Tool (V) and select the 'Plate’ text and description. Hold the Shift and Alt keys, and drag and drop about 1 cm down.

Transform Again (Command-D) so we have three plates on our menu flyer.

Step 11

Then select the 'Title’ and the three plates with their respective descriptions. Hold the Shift-Alt keys, and drag and drop about 5 cm down.

Transform Again (Command-D) or manually drag and drop with the help of Smart Guides.

Step 12

Now that the layout is done, all you need to do is fill out the menu items for the flyer, using the Type Tool.

File > Save As. Save it in two formats: one in (.ai)” file format by selecting Adobe Illustrator from the Format drop-down menu in the Save As dialog box, and another Save As Adobe PDF format.  

Congratulations! Your Restaurant Menu Flyer Is Done!

3. Discover Creative Inspiration

Book cover design is one of the most creative areas of print design. Why? Compared to more commercial print media, like flyers and business cards, book covers are intrinsically linked to art—the connection between a book and a potential reader is emotionally charged. 

Although we are told not to judge a book by its cover, we can’t help doing just that when we browse a bookshelf. By making your cover as creative and striking as possible, you can hope to win the hearts and minds of your readership and convert browsing to sales. 

Professional cover designers know the power of treating a cover like an art canvas. So look to inspirational sources like the fantastic Book Cover Archive and Pinterest to really get your creative juices flowing.

It’s also important to not allow your creativity to outpace your judgement about making the cover genre- and audience-appropriate. 

So crime thrillers have a certain design language (large sans serif fonts in punchy colors like red and blue), as do historical romance novels (which tend towards script fonts and pastel colors). 

If you’re self-publishing an eBook, it pays to be aware of the sorts of design styles which are trending on eBook stores, like the Kindle Store and Google Play.

4. Get the Essentials Right

When you start to design your book cover, you should take a bit of time to carefully prepare your artwork before you begin designing. 

Consider the format and size of the cover—will you print the book as a paperback (softcover) or hardback, or create a digital eBook? Do you have a standard size in mind such as Pocket Book, Demy, or Royal? Look up industry-recommended book sizes, and don’t be tempted to stray from the norm. 

Top tip: If you want to adjust the size of your cover artwork without starting over in a new document, you can use the Free Transform Tool (E) in InDesign to scale the artwork.

You’ll also need to add a bleed to your cover artwork, which allows background elements and color to extend past the page (trim) edge, making for a more seamless printed result. In InDesign, go to File > Document Setup to add a bleed width to your artwork. 

Consider also the expected spine width of your cover, which will have a knock-on effect on the overall width of the cover artwork (which includes the back cover, spine and front cover, from left to right). You can work out the width of the spine once you know the final page count of your book and the paper stock the inside pages will be printed on (which will affect how bulky the book is, and therefore how wide the spine is). 

Use an online spine width calculator to find the final width, or ask for a width spec from your printer.

5. For the Front Cover, Focus on Balance, Impact, and Legibility

When designing your front cover, it’s a good tip to let yourself be creative and experiment with different layouts, styles, and themes. The more eye-catching and imaginative you can make your book cover, the better!

However, you do tend to find that covers still follow some rules of layout. After all, you will always need to include some essential information, including the book title and author name. The publisher might also want to include a review or short blurb on the front of the book. 

Some cover designers choose to make a feature of the title, creating covers which prioritise typographic design. Alternatively, a single strong photo or graphic can be the dominant feature, with type taking a secondary role. 

Above all, you want to foster balance on your cover, and because covers tend to be relatively small it usually looks best if either type or graphic are highlighted more than the other. This also contributes to the improved legibility of the cover, which is also incredibly important when a cover is viewed from a distance away.

6. Use the Back Cover to Seal the Deal

While the front cover should be designed to advertise the book and provoke an immediate reaction from a reader, the back cover should be used to ‘seal the deal’, providing more enticing information about the book.

Here is the place to include a blurb (a short, interesting summary of the narrative), and possibly reviews (it goes without saying to only include positive ones!).

You will also need to place a barcode (use a barcode generator once you have an ISBN to hand) and optional pricing information on the back cover too. The publisher may also want to include their logo and website, which is usually placed at the bottom of the back cover. 

7. Don’t Neglect the Spine

Readers won’t always come into contact with your book through looking at the front cover. The sheer volume of books in stores can mean retailers can choose to stack your book alongside thousands of other competing titles, with only the spine visible. So this small area of spine can spell the difference between someone picking up your book or dismissing it in an instant. 

Take the time to consider the design of your spine. You can lift elements from the front cover, such as the title and author name, but you can also add extra quirky details. 

In this example, I designed a vintage-inspired cover for a book of fairy tales. The artwork on the front cover is intricate and fantastical, and I wanted to translate this mood to the spine of the book.

The spine has trailing vines and a rose detail, which frame the script type and make the spine just as romantic and ethereal as the front cover.

8. Export Your Cover for Printing

When you’ve finished the artwork for your cover, you’ll need to export your design as a press-ready PDF file to be printed. 

To do this, head up to File > Export in InDesign, and choose Adobe PDF (Print) from the Format menu. Choose Press Quality from the Preset options to ensure your artwork is exported at very high quality. 

Top tip: The cover should be exported as one whole image (including back cover, front cover, and spine).
